This Just In: Young, Scrappy, and Hungry

Today we celebrate our Independence Day. From our couch. With musical theater.

It’s hard to think about Independence Day without having Bill Pullman’s riveting speech ring in my brain. You know the one, especially if you were a teenager in the 90s like I was. Anyway, maybe this will jog your memory:

And should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice: We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on! We’re going to survive! Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!

Yeah, it’s super cheesy but it is memorable.

This July 4th weekend, our union may not be fighting aliens who want to destroy our world, but we are fighting an invisible virus with a staggering infection rate. Thankfully, Disney+ provided the gift we all needed to keep us home, away from people, while celebrating our freedom: HAMILTON ON BROADWAY!

Carla and I saw Hamilton when it toured Orlando last year. It was, to keep the cheese alive, magical. Listening to the cast album is one thing, but seeing the choreography, the lighting, and how everything works together to compliment the amazing lyrics take Hamilton to the stratosphere.

This weekend Disney blessed us all (well, those willing to pay $6.99 a month) with unlimited access to the original broadway cast recording of Hamilton. It doesn’t quite replicate the thrill of seeing the show live on stage, but it’s pretty damn close. Plus, the camera angles are WAY better than the seats I’d be able to afford.

I don’t know when I’ll be able to see a show in an actual theater again. Hamilton comes back to Orlando in May of 2021 (at least it is currently scheduled to return) and Carla and I have tickets, but at this point what COVID will permit is anyone’s guess. Until it’s safe to go back to the theater, I’m sure we’ll get our Disney+ money’s worth and “wear out the tape” on Hamilton (that’s another reference for you 80s and 90s kids).

Happy Hamilton weekend!
