A few weeks ago, I caught a glimpse of Medium’s latest redesign. Now that the design is official across the entire platform, there are a few things that I love and a few things I’m not sure about. Let’s dive in.

Numbers no more!

Right off the bat, I see Medium simplified the feed for publications and individual profiles. I’m a big fan of this change. The previous design required a significant amount of scrolling if you weren’t interested in the first story. As a publication owner, this is fantastic.

But…

There are a few odd things about the new feed, too. Namely, the clap and comment counts are gone. I’m a big fan of this change.

Claps and comments should not factor into someone’s decision to read a post or not. And, let’s be honest, bigger numbers are attractive. But, as we all know, bigger numbers don’t always equate to quality. People who participate in clap farms and tribes (yeah, I see you) inflate otherwise mediocre writing. Removing the clap and comment count from the feed requires the headline to stand on its own.
