In discussion with Writing Cooperative writers, a "writer's code of ethics" may be necessary. Using generative AI should be approached like citing a source, and that's now the policy for Writing Cooperative submissions. The issue is that it's hard to know when someone used a generative AI and didn't cite it. It becomes a subjective question based on the quality of the writing, which may be unfair to the writer.

I'm glad Medium is discussing these issues and soliciting responses. It's a murky area that is both exciting as a creator who enjoys playing with new tools and confusing as a publication owner who wants to publish high-quality content based on human experiences. We, as writers, need to set our own standards and develop that "code of ethics" that we collectively hold each other accountable to.
